Surgery
Surgery
Here at Burwood & Bay Vet, our surgeons can perform most types of soft tissue surgery and orthopaedic surgeries, with a commitment to getting the best outcome for your pet’s health.
What is soft tissue surgery?
The body’s soft tissues are those parts not associated with the nervous (e.g. brain) and musculoskeletal (bone) systems. In our vet practice in Concord, soft tissue surgery is a broad discipline encompassing many of the surgeries you will be familiar with.
Common soft tissue surgical procedures performed by our expert Concord vets include pet desexing [link to desexing], large mass or lump removals, respiratory and chest surgery, heart surgery, liver surgery and intestinal surgery. Using advanced technology in our state of the art vet clinic many surgeries can be minimally invasive.
One of our vets has done a residency in soft tissue surgery through the Royal College of veterinary Surgeons. As a result we have the ability to perform more complicated procedures at our practice.
What is orthopaedic surgery?
Orthopaedic surgery relates to your pet’s bones. Commonly our vets perform orthopaedic surgeries to repair broken bones or correct defects such as luxating patella and ruptured cruciate ligaments in dogs.
Cruciate Ligament Disease
Our own vets have the ability to perform three types of procedures for this common knee issue seen in dogs: TPLO, TTA and lateral suture.
The TPLO (Tibial Platuea Leveling Osteotomy) as well as the TTA (Tibial Tuberosity Advancement) surgeries are both done by our vets Michael and Greg. We are one of only a few first opinion practices that can offer this procedure at our own practice rather than referring these cases to an expensive referral hospital.
What happens during surgery?
If your pet requires surgery at Burwood & Bay Vet, our friendly staff will explain to you exactly what’s involved and what you’ll need to do, but here are the basics.
In the morning
The pet will be admitted into our surgical ward in the morning. Cats and dogs will need to have been fasted from food from the night before. They can drink throughout the night before and in the morning on the day of their procedure.
During surgery
General anaesthesia will be administered by our expert surgeon, and surgery is performed under close observation from the team of experienced nursing staff. Blood pressure, breathing rate, ECG, carbon dioxide levels, temperature and blood oxygen levels are monitored while our expert surgeon carries out the operation. We continue to monitor the pet during the recovery stage and they will be clean, dry, warm and settled in our state of the art Concord vet practice.
What then?
In most cases pets are able to return home once they are awake, walking, and have their pain under control. If there are any concerns about a pet’s recovery we may keep them overnight for observation – your pet’s health is our top priority. Once your pet has returned home Burwood & Bay Vet will provide you with comprehensive post-surgery care instructions.
